GILDI

A cryptocurrency app

OVERVIEW

GILDI is a mobile app and hardware wallet owned by Ragnar Labs, Inc. The main purpose of the product was to give its users easy, secure, and affordable access to various realms of cryptobanking.

DISCLAIMER: DUE TO NDA TERMS I AM UNABLE TO SHARE THE FULL APP

MY ROLE: Lead UX/UI designer

MY TOOLS: Sketch, Illustrator, Principle, Asana

THE CHALLENGE

Users typically need to download/purchase multiple products for a service. Cryptocurrency apps need to provide a more cohesive mobile experience for overwhelmed novice investors and traders.

THE SOLUTION

Ragnar proposes the mobile app, GILDI to address the user’s problems. It aims to streamline the user’s experience and save them money by providing essential & customizable features of crypto-banking in one product with a compatible hardware wallet

WHO ARE OUR USERS?

USER INTERVIEWS

We invited potential users to our office for in person interviews and asked them questions on their needs/goals and expectations for a cryptocurrency product. The users varied from security engineers, experienced crypto-traders, and novice traders.

  1. What made you get into cryptocurrency trading?

  2. What kinds of products do you use? Why?

  3. Do you use a hardware or a software wallet? Why?

  4. Describe the last time you conducted an exchange? How was it? What was difficult? What was easy?

  5. What are some features you would like to see in a cryptocurrency app?

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

There are a variety of cryptocurrency apps: each with different approaches to trading and overall experience

A user will most likely have to use multiple different products:

  • Purchase cryptocurrency through an exchange service like Coinbase

  • Purchase a hardware wallet, Ledger or a software wallet, Exodus or use a paper wallet

  • Track market prices/data on websites like CoinMarketCap or Cryptowatch

PERSONA: J.C. PENI

  • Mid 20s

  • Tech- savvy (mostly mobile)

  • Brand new to cryptocurrency but wants to start trading

  • Security and price are most important to them

USER JOURNEY MAPS

Pain points in J.C.’s (specifically a novice trader) experience with cryptocurrency was displayed on a user journey map.

  • Lack of onboarding, complicated jargon, and overwhelming experience for novices

  • Security concern

  • Tracking unstable market prices manually

DEFINE

WHAT DO OUR USERS NEED?

INFORMATION ARCHITECTURE

The basic information architecture of GILDI was defined using a site map

USER FLOWS

Due to the complexity of the interaction with the hardware wallet and cryptocurrency transactions in general, user flows were essential in simplifying the user’s experience.

DESIGN

MAKING USERS’ GOALS A REALITY

INITIAL WIREFRAMES

The basic layout of GILDI was made using Sketch and focused on the main features defined in the ‘Define’ phase.

  • Dashboard feature where the user can keep track of all their funds

  • Send feature with a QR code scan feature

  • Receive feature that generates a custom QR code/address

  • Exchange feature that allows the user to enter 2 cryptocurrencies while seeing the current exchange rates

  • Transaction History feature that allows the user to see past or pending transactions

HIGH FIDELITY WIREFRAMES

GILDI began to flesh out its branding, focusing on a sharp, clean look. The nordic roots of the product name were portrayed in the apps use of imagery.

PRODUCTION ( RED LINES)

Through Asana I communicated specifications for screen designs with our developer team.

HARDWARE DESIGN

Design for the hardware wallet was limited due to the screen size and storage space of the device.

Wallet was designed to match GILDI branding as much as possible

TEST

WHAT DO OUR USERS THINK?

USER INTERVIEWS

We conducted in person testing with users of varying levels of experience: a security engineer at a large tech company, a heavy cryptocurrency trader, and a brand new cryptocurrency owner.

  • Overall feedback was positive on the design and aesthetic of the app and device.

  • Testing brought up the potential of new features for the app

ITERATE

HOW CAN WE MAKE IT BETTER?

DESIGN IMPROVEMENTS

New features were also developed based off of our users’ feedback:

  1. Portfolio overview of all accounts

  2. Price alerts for specific cryptocurrencies

  3. Requests for specific funds

  4. News Feature

WHAT’S NEXT?

With the help of the company’s stakeholders, Ragnar, Inc. plans to use increasing funds to support more usability testing for GILDI.

GILDI is predicted to gain a larger user base, which will provide more opportunities for new features to be implemented.

As cryptocurrency becomes more commonplace, the next evolution of GILDI may focus on how larger companies deal with cryptocurrency instead of individual users.
